Abstract
Until recently the treatment of Parkinsonism rested almost entirely upon 6 extracts of the potato plant family, i.e., atropine, hyoscine, tr. Stramonium, Rabellon, Vinobel and Bellabulgara. Surgery proved unsuccessful because of lack of precise knowledge of the pathologic area responsible for tremor and rigidity. 3 yrs. ago, synthetic prepns. opened new horizons for Parkinson sufferers. Several of these new prepns. have proved helpful and one in particular, Artane, has established itself as a valuable addition to the treatment of the Parkinson disorder. Artane is less toxic than all other prepns. and has better effects on rigidity and tremor than most of the available drugs. It has a favorable cerebral stimulating action that livens the patient and serves to overcome depression and discouragement. Keywords
