The Presence of Antibody to a Normal Rabbit Liver Antigen in Rabbits Infected with Trypanosoma gambiense

Abstract
Rabbits infected with Trypanosoma gambiense develop complement fixing and precipitating antibody to an antigen present in normal rabbit tissue. This is not a response to a trypanosome antigen which is antigenically similar to a normal tissue antigen. The origin of skin lesions which appear in infected rabbits is discussed. A hypothesis is developed to explain the tissue destruction, metabolic disturbances, and eventual death of rabbits infected with T. gambiense.
