Abstract
The coupled τ operator formalism is applied to derive exact and approximate selection rules that govern the rotational state distribution of products following an interaction between a diatomic molecule and a free atom. The analysis is performed for a two-channel system in which one of the atoms is infinitely heavy. Keywords
