Abstract
L, 2-Dimethyl-5-nitroimidazole, given by rumen fistula, prevented bloat for 6-8 days in 3 cows stall-fed red clover (Trifolium pratense L. ). The treatment caused a slight, temporary reduction in food intake 24-48 hours after treatment. In a trial with grazing cows no effect on milk production was found. The protection from bloating was due to a reduction in protozoa! numbers and the consequent reduction of fermentation rate in the rumen. This publication has 7 references indexed in Scilit:
