Abstract
Social modernisation is revealed in practice as a substantive process, continuous historically, not identical with Westernisation, in multi-type relations with tradition, and as distinct from economic development, encompasses the general development of the human being. Its main features include the development of science and technology, economic growth, the advancement of social organisation and democratisation, modernisation of social values and ways of life, and urbanisation. Different countries modernise differently. Colonialism, the international division of labour, antiquated social structures and deficiencies in education are historic obstacles which require study. Each country develops its own strategy through planning, absorption of foreign ideas or tolerating a dual structure, but the state will take the leading role. China's own size, ancient civilisation and socialism make it the most distinctive case of modernisation. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
