CARCINOMA OF CERVIX: THE USE OF AN INTEGRATED SYSTEM OF TREATMENT USING A LINEAR INTRACAVITARY RADIATION SOURCE AND EXTERNAL IRRADIATION

Abstract
The advantages of a linear arrangement of radiation sources in the intracavitary irradiation of carcinoma of the uterine cervix are discussed and an applicator developed on this principle is described. The resultant dosimetry permits a higher contribution to the pelvic lymph nodes than with the applicators customarily available. It is more accurately integrated with the necessary external irradiation by the use of a central wedge filter. The applicator is easy to apply; permits free drainage; and the constant distance from the rectum, together with the use of cesium 137 and an incorporated lead screen, has significantly reduced rectal dose. The results of treatment as regards local control and complications are described. Although the numbers are small and the period of time too short for definitive analysis, the technique would appear to be effective and without an undue number of serious complications. It is applicable to patients at all stages of the disease.
