A Modified Cage and Procedure for Rearing Parasites of Brown Soft Scale1

Abstract
The California sleeve cage was modified to facilitate collection of parasites of Coccus hesperidum L. by constructing a removable bottom and coverings for all ventilation holes. When an anesthetic, CO2, was introduced into the cage, the parasites could be collected with a modified hand vacuum device. The number of parasites collected was determined volumetrically. Then the collected parasites were transferred to field cages for field release. The modified cage resulted in savings of 29.6–59.6 man-h/wk.
