Abstract
This study extends earlier findings (Labitzke, 1977b) that Major Stratospheric warmings occur if height wave 1 reaches a pronounced maximum in the middle stratosphere concurrent with a marked minimum of height wave 2. It is shown that this result is also valid for the troposphere and that the planetary-scale height waves in the troposphere display an interannual variability similar to that found in the stratosphere. In addition the phases of the daily planetary-scale waves in the troposphere are less variable, i.e., the main circulation systems tend to be stationary, during those winters when the stratospheric circulation is relatively undisturbed and height wave 2 is well developed in the troposphere and stratosphere, but fast traveling components occur during the disturbed winters after the breakdown of the stratospheric polar vortex. Keywords
