Abstract
We show that the Gaussian isokinetic thermostat used in nonequilibrium molecular-dynamics calculations can be derived from a Hamiltonian. An alternative variational approach involves geodesic motion in a curved space. We consider the implications of this result for the nonequilibrium Lorentz gas and thermostated systems in general. © 1996 The American Physical Society. Keywords
