Abstract
Pyrolysis-gas chromatography (PGC) has been successfully applied to the identification of cockroaches at the species level. Specimens can be easily identified from species specific peaks or peak groups in the latter portion of the pyrogram. The species specific peaks are reproducible and little influenced by sex, age, diet or developmental factors. Analyses can be routinely performed in approximately 25 minutes on submilligram quantities of material. In an experiment of 52 coded samples, PGC enabled specimens for which reference pyrograms were available to be identified with 100% accuracy and specimens for which reference pyrograms were not available to be placed into groups of unknowns. Keywords
