Abstract
Data are presented to demonstrate that mixtures of influenza A and B viruses by serial passage in embryonated eggs and in mice persist. Ten-to 11-day-old embryos were employed. Inoculations consisted of 0.15 ml. of allantoic fluid (10-3) containing 50 U. of penicillin. Incubation was for 55-65 hrs. at 35 C. Three to 5 weeks-old mice were infected intranasally with 0.07 ml. of a 2.5% suspension of infected mouse lung. Identification of the viruses present in infected mouse lungs was by means of protection tests. The results would indicate that a combination of more closely related strains might be maintained indefinitely by the usual methods of laboratory cultivation. Keywords
