The public health nursing role: an overview of future trends

Abstract
With the introduction of purchasing and provider roles, public health has developed mainly a purchasing or commissioning function, thus leaving a gap where the provider of public health services used to function (Editorial 1995). As a result of the 1974 re-organisa- tion of the NHS, the independent role and voice of the medical officer of health was lost. The requirement for these officers to produce an independent health report for their area was also abandoned.
