Personality and suicidal history in psychiatric patients

Abstract
The study sample comprised 575 psychiatric referrals for whom MMPI [Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory] data were available. Patients were categorized according to suicidal history. The attempted suicide (SA) and nonsuicidal (NS) patients were differentiated significantly on the D [Depression], Pd [Psychopathic Deviate], Mf [Masculinity-Femininity], Dy [Dependency], Es [Ego-Strength], Ne [Neuroticism], Ex [Extraversion], Ho [Hostility], SD [Social Desirability], IP [Index of Psychopathology], Anx [Anxiety] and Unc [Unconventionality] scales. Important differences between the sexes emerged: for men, the profiles of the suicidal ideation (SI) and NS patients were similar; for women, those of the SI and SA were similar. Male and female suicide attempters correspond closely in the pattern and degree of deviation from the NS patients of their own sex. Patients who had a history of suicide attempts constituted a more psychologically disturbed group and points to a need for further examination of the meaning of SI for men and women.
