Abstract
The author has investigated the plankton fluctuations during one annual cycle (May 1963–July 1964) at Askö, 65 km SSW of Stockholm. The hydrographical conditions were characterized by a low salinity, about 7 %.. The temperature of the water was Iowa great deal of the period, i. e. less than 8° C from surface to bottom from October to the end of May. Ice or drift ice was present for two months. The dominating plankton group was the copepods, with Acartia bijilosa as the most common species. The cladoceran season cycle was rather short; it began in early June and ended in early November. The most common form was Podon polyphemoides, The rotifers were present during the same period and were of similar importance. The genus Synchaeta was represented by four species. In all, 32 species of planktonic animals were recorded during the period of investigation.
