Distribution of Mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in Northern Israel: A Historical Perspective

Abstract
Mosquito larvae are routinely collected by the Israeli Ministry of Health. Data from 1974 to 1983, supplemented by earlier records, were used to study the temporal and spatial distribution of 8 Anopheles species occurring in northern Israel. Geographical distribution, habitat preference, and seasonality of the various species point to natural ecological pairs, which are also taxonomically related. Anopheles sacharovi, formerly the major malaria vector, is increasing in numbers and extending its geographical distribution. The other malaria vectors remain abundant. Given the rise in number of imported malaria cases, reappearance of indigenous malaria is still possible, and surveillance should be maintained.
