Abstract
This paper is an attempt to clarify and give content to the concept of inadequacy of the personality, for the concept has gained considerable currency in psychiatry as a hypothesis to account for difficultieg encountered in diagnosis, prognosis and treatment. Before the theory can be evaluated, it should be stated in a reasonably precise form. This enquiry starts from a very general statement about the idea of inadequacy as usually encountered in psychiatric practice, and proceeds towards a formulation in more exact terms. Keywords
