Abstract
On the basis of own examinations and critical judgement of the data in the literature the author states the following: In the gastric musculature of newborn babies the muscular bundles have a reticular shape and between them some areas of various sizes are free of the musculature physiologically as well. The tissue appearance of the latter completely agrees with that of the so-called "congenital muscular defects" which had been considered by the cited authors as a developmental anomaly and the cause of the gastric rupture in the newborn period. Since, in spite of the existing muscular gaps, no rupture of the stomach had occurred in either of the cases the author examined, he therefore considers erroneous the opinion in the literature according to which rupture of the stomach in the neonatal period is caused by so-called "congenital muscular defect". In the author''s view, the congenital gap which he encountered in his examination and which exists in the gastric musculature is not the cause of the rupture of the stomach but determines only the site of the rupture, possibly taking place because of some other reason. Keywords
