Abstract
The idealized stress-strain curve of dynamic loading for the one-dimensional compression of an isotropic solid with rigidity and yield point as shown in a paper by Rice and his colleagues is examined. It is concluded that this curve is correct only for cases where the rate of compression is low but that it is incorrect for cases where the rate of compression is very high. Based on the difficulties of dislocation motion in a solid at high shock-wave velocities, a modified idealized dynamic stress-strain curve for one-dimensional compression is suggested.
