Abstract
In the article, the results of a questionnaire-cartographic inquiry, held into the current state of lynx (Lynx lynx L.) and wolf (Canis lupus L.) populations in the whole territory of Lithuania in 1995, are presented. It was established that forests permanently inhabited by lynxes made approximately 5% of forest area, forming several local groups. The densest and stablest lynx population was in the northern, middle and eastern part of Lithuania. The lynx, a rare and extinct animal, should be included into the Red Data Book of Lithuania, and the means protective towards the species should be designed. Forests permanently inhabited by wolves made 19% of forest area, distributing relatively regularly in all regions and landscapes. Recently, due to a increase in the wolf number, a conflict situation arises: the species protection, imposed by international obligations, should be combined with population management to maintain its optimal volume, some 100-300 animals.
