Abstract
A model of stopping of a low velocity heavy ion moving through an electron gas has been used to calculate the stopping power of gold and tungsten for ions (61<or=54) channelled along (110) Au and (100) W directions. A comparison is the results with experimental data shows satisfactory agreement and a definite improvement over modified Firsov theory in producing deep minima for some of the projectiles. Keywords
