Abstract
Adrenalectomy of renal hypertensive rats induces a fall in blood pressure in conjunction with an increase in sodium content of the aorta wall and the myocardium. Prednisolone administration to such rats restores blood pressure to hypertensive levels while removing the excess sodium from their tissues. It is suggested that the excess hydration of the vascular tissues, as indicated by the increased sodium content, depresses arterial tone and myocardial contraction, thus resulting in the blood pressure-lowering effect of adrenalectomy in hypertensive rats. Keywords
