Magnetostriction in Manganese Phosphide Single Crystal

Abstract
Magnetostrictions in a single crystal of magnanese phosphide are measured by means of the strain gauge technique using the conventional balanced bridge method at temperatures between 4.2°K and 308°K and in magnetic fields up to 80 kOe. Observed magnetostrictions show the various behaviors depending upon the magnetization process. The first separation of magnetostriction into parts, the anisotropic, exchange and forced magnetostrictions, from the experimental results in the field along the b axis at 77°K is presented. It is emphasized that the saturation moments along the principal axes in MnP are essentially different from each other in the high field measurements up to 90 kOe.
