LITTORAL AND FLUVIATILE FACIES IN THE ‘KELLAWAYS BEDS’ ON THE MARKET WEIGHTON SWELL

Abstract
SUMMARY: The sequence of Jurassic sands in the South Cave area is described. The White Sands (probably Bathonian) are fluviatile sands and clays with a rootlet horizon and burrows near the top. These sediments were partly reworked by the Callovian transgression bringing in the Kellaway Sands and Rock, here informally subdivided into units A/B to K. These are tabular cross bedded sands with intertidal to shallow subtidal trace fossils, infaunal bivalves and disarticulated shells of epifauna, the latter especially occurring in distinct shell bands. The facial evidence indicates tidal to subtidal channels for the most part, with channel lag shell bands.
