Rehybridization of CO under the influence of coadsorbed K on Ru(001)

Abstract
The idea of a rehybridization of the C–O bond due to the influence of CO adsorbed K on Ru(001) is reexamined. New results from angle dependent Auger studies are shown to substantiate the conclusion that the CO is perpendicularly adsorbed at high coverages and to support the rehybridization model. Arguments against the proposition that a K–CO complex forms or that a direct K–CO interaction occurs are summarized. Evidence that the bonding of CO at all mixed layer coverages is similar arises from coverage dependent trends. The rehybridization model for CO on K covered Ru(001) presents a picture of the influence of coadsorbed K on transition metals consistent with all of the results to date.
