Abstract
Polycystic ovaries may cause amenorrhea with resulting sterility. Associated signs are hirsutism (usually), obesity (often), and enlargement of the clitoris (occasionally). Bilateral wedge resection of the enlarged ovaries results in normal menses in 90% of these patients, and pregnancy follows in at least 65% of the sterile patients. The operation has no effect on the hirsutism, obesity, or clitoral enlargement. The disease appears to be primarily ovarian, although etiology of the syndrome and mechanism of the response to surgery are unknown. Keywords
