The Value of the Amniotic Fluid Lecithin: Sphingomyelin Ratio in the Management of High Risk Pregnancy

Abstract
Summary: The amniotic fluid lecithin: sphingomyelin ratio was used to assess fetal maturity in the management of 62 high risk pregnancies. Correlation between the ratio and the onset of respiratory distress syndrome was good in 58 of the 62 cases (93%). In 7 patients delivered with an immature‐type ratio, one baby died in utero, 4 babies developed respiratory distress syndrome and of these 2 died from hyaline membrane disease. The value of the test in the management of high risk pregnancies is discussed.
