Abstract
The portrayal of older adults in 12 family-oriented, prime-time television programs were content analyzed to determine cognitive, physical, and health status; social interaction; and emotional behavior. Among 193 characters portraying elderly adults, 3,468 verbalizations and behaviors were examined. Results suggested that those over age 55 are more favorably portrayed than those approximating 55 years of age. Educational and research implications of the findings are discussed.
