Abstract
The essential features of the reaction mechanisms in the fermentation of galactose by the yeast Saccharomyces fragilis as proposed by Caputto et al were confirmed. Their observations were extended by the isolation of the enzyme which catalyzed the transformation of galactose-1-phosphate into glucose-1-phosphate. It was suggested that this enzyme be named phosphogalactoisomerase. The presence of this enzyme in animal tissues was not demonstrated. Keywords
