Use of Enzymes in Cardiac Diagnosis

Abstract
A review of enzyme testing in diagnosis of myocardial disease has been presented. Qualifications and specific uses of the various enzymes in terms of disease duration, appearance of peak activity change and causes of false negatives and positives have been analyzed with regard to mode of usage in clinical medicine. A summary of the experience with 2 newer enzyme tests, the 2-hydroxy-butyrate dehydrogenase (HBD) and creatine phosphokinase (CPK,) has been presented with specific indications for each of these diagnostic modalities. These newer enzyme studies have been performed in geriatric patients with varying disease and found to be reproducible with minimal false reactions provided that technique was adhered to rigidly. The use of the newer enzyme tests was found to provide useful diagnostic information in patients in whom clear cut diagnosis by conventional methods proved difficult.Keywords
