Semantic generalization of conditioned autonomic responses.

Abstract
Ss were presented with a series of verbal stimuli, some of which were followed by electric shock. Subsequently they were administered unreinforced verbal stimuli, distributed along a scaled meaning dimension extending from words similar to those shocked to neutral words. Responses in 3 autonomic systems were monitored (finger plethysmograph, heart rate, and galvanic skin response). Generalized responses were found to words very similar in meaning to the training stimuli. Response amplitude fell off sharply with the presentation of less closely related words.
