Abstract
Four of 15 schizophrenic patients showed changes in the eosinophil response to ACTH, insulin and epinephrine following production of thalamic and hypothalamic lesions by the Spiegel-Wycis apparatus. Lesions in these 4 patients involved the anterior and dorso-medial nuclei of the thalamus and the posterolateral portion of the hypothalamus. Abnormalities appeared 4 weeks post-operatively; they were greatest when the test material was epinephrine, and least when it was ACTH. Three of the 4 patients showed no change in insulin sensitivity. The 4th showed insulin hypersensitivity and possibly hypoglycemic unresponsiveness. This same patient also displayed a sustained rise in the fasting eosinophil level following a 2d operation. Keywords
