Self-Reliance and Social Cooperation

Abstract
Drug use and abuse are viewed as symptomatic of more basic and underlying problems. Drug usage indicates the degree of alienation felt by young people. Addiction and drug use are only a side show activity—merely a way of evading the problems of every day living. With drugs, the user finds a way of escaping, conforming, or rebelling. There must be an emphasis on self-reliance and the courage to be imperfect and not live by the curse of perfection. Also, there is nothing wrong about the mobilization of inner resources but we must not only turn inward but also outward especially since we are socially embedded. The need is for equality and mutual respect. The promise for our salvation and growth is in social cooperation. Although we may have no control over the vicissitudes and circumstances of our life we do have control over our reactions to these circumstances. Thus, each person with his freedom of choice chooses between alternative actions. One can choose a life of Walter Mitty who finds daydreaming more exciting than real life or search for a Walden Three.
