Cultivation of Rickettsia prowazeki in Dead Chick Embryos

Abstract
In 3-day-old chick embryos killed by chilling to 4 C for 24 hrs., living cells were demonstrated after subsequent incubation for 16 days at 37 C. Rickettsia prowazeki multiplied abundantly on inoculation into the dead embryo. Total yields per egg, however, were less than those obtained by the usual method.
