Abstract
Attention is drawn to recent work on wind and shelter and a comprehensive list of references is given. Diagrams illustrate the main effects of barriers on the flow of air and these effects are discussed. The author then considers shortly the influence of wide tree belts on wind and their other effects such as shade, temperature, and humidity, as they present practical problems to the hill farmer. A diagram gives the isopleths of annual mean wind speed for the British Isles together with corresponding data for individual hill sites. This diagram provides a rough estimate of those regions where shelter would seem a necessity.
