Abstract
The underlying goal of design proposals for local (public) authority Homes for old people – minimizing residents' dependence on staff – is outlined, as are certain physical features of institutional accommodation that are held to counter fulfillment of the goal. The problematic social and organizational issues on which realization of the goal rests are discussed, viz., encouraging personal and group activities among residents, providing for their privacy, and integrating mentally well and impaired and physically able and disabled categories of residents. How these issues and the related goal of independence have influenced the design proposals is described. Keywords
