Abstract
Quasielastic neutron scattering experiments on terephthal-bis-butylaniline (TBBA) show that the phenyl rings do not have a strongly preferred orientation in the smectic- (tilted ) phase. This suggests that the Meyer-McMillan model is not quite adequate for this particular system.
