Abstract
The basic formulations of non-equilibrium thermodynamics are outlined. The local approach to irreversible phenomena is developed both near and far from thermodynamic equilibrium. The possibility of transition phenomena between states removed far away from equilibrium is pointed out and analysed using the methods of bifurcation theory and fluctuation theory. Some remarkable analogies with phase transitions are developed. Keywords
