Abstract
Free radicals were generated by X irradiation in single crystals of hydroxyproline HCl irradiated at low temperature. Proton hyperfine couplings were deduced from ENDOR measurements on two species, namely, a primary reduction product and a secondary free radical formed in a hydrogen abstraction process. These two radicals are representative of two general types of radicals, one nearly planar and the other markedly pyramidal, in which the unpaired electron interacts with nonexchangeable β protons attached to carbon and exchangeable β protons attached to oxygen. The characteristics of the hyperfine coupling tensors of these protons are discussed. Keywords
