Abstract
The effects of ischemia on the oxidative phos-phorylation of mitochondria from various tissues was studied. The phosphorylatlng mechanism of brain mitochondria Is labile and Is the first to be lost during ischemia. In metabolism in vivo, the energy available under lschemlc conditions Is not enough to meet the requirements of normal physiological brain function. These situations may lead to symptoms such as unconsciousness and occasionally convulsions, associated with disintegration in glia and nerve cells which can be demonstrated by electron microscopy. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
