Abstract
Of many insecticides tested, DDT is the most effective. The insecticide must impregnate the silk mass and penetrate the silk channel. Individual ear injections of 1% DDT in mineral oil result in high levels of control, but if improperly timed and applied injury to pollination will result. Mineral oil emulsion sprays containing DDT show promise of approaching the effectiveness of individual ear injections with less possibility of injury to the corn. Dust treatments have proved effective only where low populations of ear-worms were encountered. Residue analyses have shown rather large amounts of DDT on the husks and silks of the harvested ears but only very small amounts or none were found on the edible portion of the ear. Keywords
