HYMENOPTERA VENOM ALLERGY - A GEOGRAPHIC STUDY

Abstract
Rast [radioallergosorbent test] results for the 5 common venoms from 1024 positive sera obtained from patients who experienced recent severe allergic reactions to insect stings were analyzed for 9 different geographic areas of the USA. Substantial differences were found as a function of geography and insect distribution. Apparently multiple reactivity is most common in areas with the largest variety of insects, crossreactivity is not the only important cause of multiple reactivity and sensitization by multiple stings is more common than suggested by patient histories. [Some of the hymenopteran venoms studied include those from Apis mellifera, Polistes, Vespa crabro, Vespula spp., Dolichovespula arenaria, D. maculata, Pogonomyrmex and Solenopsis].
