Photolysis of 2,4,6-Tri-t-butylnitrobenzene

Abstract

Photolysis of 2,4,6-tri-t-butylnitrobenzene gave 5,7-di-t-butyl-3,3-dimethyloxindole. The latter was synthesized by an unambiguous route from 3,3-dimethyloxindole. The mechanism of this intramolecular photocyclization is discussed.
