AN ELECTRONICALLY SCANNED AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUE TO MEASURE WINTER INJURY IN ALFALFA

Abstract
A method was developed to measure void areas and subsequent canopy development patterns in alfalfa plots and fields as affected by winter injury. The method utilizes aerial infrared photography, taken sequentially throughout the growing season, or year to year as well, followed by electronic measurements of the photographs. The method demonstrates that strong canopy recovery takes place throughout the growing season and a considerable amount of the damage is not permanent.
