Pituitary Sarcoma

Abstract
A 31-year-old woman, who had received two courses of x-ray therapy for acromegaly, died after three attempts to remove a rapidly recurring pituitary sarcoma. There are seven previously described examples of this tumor and six of these patients had also received radiation for pituitary adenoma. Large tissue x-ray doses (averaging 7,220 roentgens) were given. Long latent periods (averaging 10.4 years) existed between the initial treatment and the onset of the sarcoma. This material provides strong presumptive evidence that radiation was responsible for these neoplasms. X-ray therapy is quite valuable in the management of pituitary tumors, but caution is advised in the use of large tissue doses.
