Abstract
In response to Bass's article "Erythromycin Concentrations in Middle Ear Exudates"1 in the September issue, we would like to clarify the apparent disparity between in vivo effects of various types of erythromycin. It is known, but not mentioned in the article, that both erythromycin ethylsuccinate and estolate are absorbed in their bacteriologically inactive ester forms2 and must be hydrolyzed to active erythromycin base. Bioassay levels measure the total of both ester and base and do not correlate well with antibacterial activity. Keywords
