Sir Charles Tupper

Abstract
CHARLES Tupper, the son of a Baptist minister, was born in Amherst, Nova Scotia, in 1821. The family was poor, and money was borrowed to enable him to complete his medical education at Edinburgh University, where he was granted the diplomas of M.D. and L.R.C.P. After graduating he practiced in his home town for eleven years before entering the political arena. In 1855 he ran against and defeated Joseph Howe, the renowned leader of the Government in the colonial legislative assembly.
