Effect of Grass Silage on Milk Flavors and Blood and Milk Acetone Bodies

Abstract
Acetone bodies were measured in the blood and milk of 10 Holstein cows over a 5 month winter feeding period. An interrelationship existed between levels of acetone bodies in the blood and milk and levels of acetone bodies in the grass-legume silage fed the cows. Silage levels increased in mid-winter. There was no relationship between levels of acetone bodies in the individual cow''s milk and the flavors of the milk. (All milk acetone body levels were relatively low.).
