Incompetence of the Sphincter of Oddi in the Newborn

Abstract

Two cases are presented of duodenal atresia in the newborn, with incompetence of the sphincter of Oddi and reflux of gas and barium into the biliary tree. Possible difficulties in distinguishing this condition from portal vein gas by employing the standard adult criteria are discussed and illustrated.
