Abstract
The annual number of cancer deaths is increasing in most countries due primarily to the increase and aging of the populations. Age standardized cancer death rates are declining for females but are increasing for males due to a phenomenal rise in the death rate from lung cancer. There has been an unexplained decrease in death rates from gastric cancer. In the United States, cancer survival rates have improved considerably during the last 2 decades, the greatest improvement being for cancer of the colon, rectum, cervix uteri, corpus uteri, and prostate. It is estimated that about 33% of those who now develop cancer in the United States will be five-year survivors. With maximum use of present knowledge, this might be increased to about 50%.Keywords
