A hemoglobin A2 variant which is detectable on electrophoresis occurs frequently in the heterozygous form in Canadian Indian subjects. Structural analyses have been made on this variant obtained from two such persons living in Alberta and Manitoba, respectively, and have led to its characterization as Hb-A2-Sphakiá . Similar studies on a second delta chain variant found in a Canadian subject of Ukrainian origin from Saskatchewan have shown this variant to be Hb-A2-NYU .
